OFFICE OF THE PRO VICE CHANCELLOR LEARNING AND TEACHING

AUT continues to celebrate its distinctiveness, most particularly in relation to the quality of its teaching and the student learning experience, and the employability of its graduates.

[Audit Self-Review document: 2006]

The Office of the Pro Vice Chancellor was established in 2004. It now incorporates a range of functions which are linked to the determination of the University to ensure that learning and teaching, and its development and improvement, remain a central priority for staff and students.

The Learning and Teaching Framework was introduced in 2004 and encourages and supports a 'blended learning' approach to teaching and learning. This acknowledges and develops a wider range and combination of conventional classroom-based, open and technology-based teaching practices that will meet both the needs of a changing and more diverse student body and those of staff who face competing demands on their time.

The Office incorporates the Centre for Educational and Professional Development (CEPD), the Summer School Office, and the Academic Quality Office. The Directors of those three offices, as well as the Director of E-Learning and the Project Development Manager report directly to the Pro Vice Chancellor, Learning and Teaching. The Office is also responsible for the University Learning and Teaching Committee (one of the senior committees of Academic Board) and its two sub committees for Quality Enhancement and Quality Assurance.Emerging from this is the Curriculum and Qualification Framework which establishes the oppotunity to provide students with more flexibility and choice

Professor Rob Allen is the Pro Vice Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Humanities. Prior to his arrival at AUT in 2003 he worked in a number of roles at the University of Greenwich in London, including Director of Academic Development and Director of Learning and Quality.
