SCHOOL OVERVIEW

The AUT Business School is one of the largest business schools in New Zealand. Our aim is to educate professionals for business practice. We offer a range of courses from the Bachelor of Business to the Master of Business and PhD, with supporting diplomas and certificates.

Our classes are small, usually 20-30 students. Small classes provide an interactive learning environment with emphasis on the integration of theory and business practice. Academic staff have up-to-date, relevant knowledge of business and are involved with research and scholarship.

We have close links with industry through advisory committees who work with the faculty in maintaining the relevance of our qualifications. We provide opportunities for students to network with successful business professionals through the "Breakfast Club" and workplace learning. At AUT we believe your success is our success - together!

A Broad Understanding of Business

The business environment is becoming increasingly complex. Businesses are responding to this complexity more and more by the formation of cross-functional teams, which bring together diverse perspectives such as marketing, management, law economics, finance, accounting, computing, design engineering and sales to solve specific complex business problems.

Our first year interdisciplinary programme in the Bachelor of Business responds to this complexity, providing a process for bringing together relevant perspectives, each of which illuminates a different facet of the complex problem, and integrating their insights to understand the problem as a complex whole and thus to move towards a solution.

Going Global

Students need to understand the global business environment and be able to work effectively with people from different cultures. Within the faculty, a number of student exchanges are organised for students to spend time studying or completing workplace learning overseas. AUT Business currently has exchange partnerships with universities and business schools in United States, France, Netherlands, Thailand, Great Britain and Peoples Republic of China.

Linked to Industry

The Business School actively involves industry in the development and delivery of programmes. Our programmes are structured to give businesses what they want and our graduates what they need to succeed in the workplace. We have seven Business Advisory Committees made of respected business leaders and experts in a range of business fields. These committees work to ensure that our programmes remain relevant to the real world.

World-class Research

There is a wealth of research excellence and expertise across the AUT School of Business. Over the past few years, we have become the academic home of some of the world’s leading researchers in their field. The latest research assessment exercise (PBRF) in 2006, conducted by New Zealand’s Tertiary Education Commission, places the AUT School of Business among the top 5 research-led Business Schools in the country.

Developing Capable Graduates

Business School programmes focus on producing graduates with personal and professional capabilities for the complex, fast changing, business environment. Graduates are confident learners, skilled in oral and written communication, effective team members and critical and creative thinkers. This focus on the personal and professional development of graduates, in addition to their academic development, sets our business courses apart.

Lecturers with Relevant Experience

Business School lecturers have expertise in teaching and research and have kept on top of current business practices. They also draw on their experience and that can certainly lead to a dynamic, relevant and ultimately rewarding experience for everybody.

An Interactive Learning Environment

Our emphasis is on the development of successful business graduates. Small classes help to achieve that. Small classes allow greater individual contribution and participation. You wont get lost in the crowd. Small classes foster teamwork and inter-personal skills.

Workplace Learning

The Bachelor of Business includes for all students, real work experience in New Zealand overseas. Students apply what they have learnt and learn more in professional working environments with real challenges and real solutions.

Networking through The Breakfast Club

Learning and networking go hand in hand in our Breakfast Club. Created and run by business students for students, The Breakfast Club is an informal forum for learning, debate and discussion. The Breakfast Club hosts an impressive list of notable guest speakers.
