STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

 

There are many facilities, services and support networks in place for AUT students. Some of these are specifically for postgraduate students. Below we outline some of the specialised postgraduate facilities and other areas of AUT where you can find additional help or information. If you have any other questions, email postgraduate@aut.ac.nz.

 

 

Postgraduate Facilities:


  • Library Services

    Library staff will introduce you to library facilities and services and help you find relevant information resources. If you require material that is not available at AUT, items can be requested through interlibrary loan, within New Zealand and from overseas. Postgraduate students may make an appointment for an individual consultation with a Librarian. In addition, workshops on how to use Library resources effectively are held regularly.

  • Postgraduate Centres
    There are dedicated Postgraduate Centres on Level 2 of the Akoranga Library and Level 5 of the Wellesley Library.

  • Postgraduate Rooms
    In addition to the Library Centres there are other rooms set aside for postgraduate students:

Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies
Communication Studies, WT1205
Location: Wellesley Campus, Corner Rutland, Wakefield and Queen Streets
Facilities: 12 Computers, printing facilities, telephone and worktable.
Hours: Open normal office hours. Thesis students have keys issued with a deposit paid providing access 7 days a week, 7:00am - 10:00pm.

 

School of Art and Design, WE416 and WM Level 2 (New Building)
Location: Wellesley Campus, St Paul Street
Facilities: Computer lab with Mac and PC computers, printers and video editing equipment. Available to Masters and Honours students from Art and Design only.
Hours: Key pad access 7:00am - 11:00pm weekdays, 8:00am - 5:00pm weekends.

 

WE420
Location: Wellesley Campus, St Paul Street.
Facilities: Master of Arts individual studios. Tea and coffee facilities.
Hours: Key pad access 7:00am - 11:00pm weekdays, 8am - 5pm weekends.

 

WJ217 and WJ314
Location: Wellesley Campus, St Paul Street.
Facilities: Master of Arts individual studios. Tea and coffee facilities.

Facilities: Sound recording and editing facility.

School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences

 

PhD Room: WT406

 

Location: Wellesley Campus, AUT Tower, Corner Wakefield Street and Rutland Street, Level 4.
Facilities: The workroom for PhD students has 10 computers, networked printing facilities, DVD/CD writers with Internet access. The room has a telephone and meeting tables. The kitchen is located adjacent to this room with coffee and tea making facilities, a water cooler, and a dishwasher.
Hours: Open normal office hours. 24 hour 7 day access is available with swipe card.
Contact: Celia Stevenson, the Group Administrator for SCMS ext 5856 to obtain a swipe card.

 

MCIS Research Students Room: WT405

 

Location: Wellesley Campus, AUT Tower, Corner Wakefield Street and Rutland Street, Level 4.
Facilities: The workroom for MCIS/PG DipCIS  students has 13 computers, networked printing facilities, DVD/CD writers. Internet access available. The room has a telephone and 24 x 7 air conditioning. The kitchen is located adjacent to this room with coffee and tea making facilities, a water cooler, and a dishwasher.
Hours: Open normal office hours. 24 hour 7 day access is available with swipe card.

AUT Technology Park

There are a number of Research Institutes based at AUT’s Technology Park. These research groups are headed by professors who supervise PhD and postgraduate students who are undertaking study within their institutes. The Technology Park offers corporate as well as lab space for students of these institutes to work in.

Location: Wellesley Campus, 350 Queen St
Facilities: 8 computers, printer. Available to postgraduate students from Social Sciences only.
Hours: Open normal office hours.

 

School of Education, AR149a
Location: Akoranga Campus
Facilities: 4 computers and printer, meeting table, whiteboard and noticeboard. There are tea and coffee making facilities, fridge and microwave. Available to postgraduate students from Education only.
Hours: Open normal office hours.

 

Faculty of Business

WU5 Postgraduate Lab

Location:  Wellesley Campus, Corner Wakefield and St Paul Streets.

Facilities:  The faculty provides two combined student study and computing rooms.  30 computers, networked printing facilities, telephone, meeting facilities, whiteboards.  The kitchen is located adjacent to this room with coffee and tea making facilities, a water cooler, microwave and dishwasher.  Available to postgraduate students studying on business programmes only.

Hours:  Open normal business hours.  24 hour 7 day access is available to postgraduate students who apply.

 

WF Building, Levels 6 and 7, Postgraduate Study Lounge Areas

Location:  Wellesley Campus, Corner of Wakefield Street and Mayoral Drive

Facilities:  The faculty provides two postgraduate study lounge areas.

Hours:  Open normal office hours.

Te Ara Poutama
Marae

Location: Corner Wellesley Street East and Symonds Street
Facilities: Marae facilities are available for noho marae (overnight stays).
Students can use the wharekai (dining room) for main meals cooked on site.

 

Te Ara Poutama staffroom is available for postgraduate students for morning and afternoon teas. Lectures for postgraduate students are delivered in the weekends to cater for the majority of students who work full time. Lectures are held in WB327 (B Building, Wellesley Street East). The wharenui (meeting house) is also available.

Other Support Services

  • Applying for Ethics Approval
    If you are doing research with human participants, you may need to get ethics approval.
  • IT Client Services
    IT Client Services provides a Student Support Helpdesk through the Open Access Labs. This is a team of eight full time AUT staff and a number of part-time lab attendants that provides assistance and help to all AUT students. Management of services is by Sunita Taneja (ext 8924).  A freephone number is also available for for distant students.  You can call 0508 AUT IT HELP (0508 288 484) from outside the Auckland area.  This excludes calls made from mobile phones and from Auckland.
    To contact the Student Helpdesk, drop into one of the Open Access Labs where one of our staff can assist, call ext 9953 or email help@aut.ac.nz.  
    To access IT resources online, you can click on the following link, UniCentral - which allows you to access your information anywhere 24/7.
  • International Student Centre 
    This is the first point of contact for international students for help and information.
