Library Classes

Library users requiring library instruction may attend classes to learn how to use the Library catalogue, indexes, bibliographic & fulltext databases.

AUT Library offers a variety of workshops to help staff and students to become information literate. These workshops use the ANZIIL - Australian and New Zealand Institute for Information Literacy – Information Literacy Standards. These standards were recently endorsed by AUT University.

These standards identify that the information literate person

  • recognises the need for information and determines the nature and extent of the information needed

  • finds needed information effectively and efficiently

  • critically evaluates information and the information seeking process

  • manages information collected or generated

  • applies prior and new information to construct new concepts or create new understandings

  • uses information with understanding and acknowledges cultural, ethical, economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information¹

¹ (Bundy, A. (Ed.). (2004). Australian and New Zealand information literacy framework: Principles, standards and practice (2 nd ed.). Adelaide : Australian and New Zealand Institute for Information Literacy. )

Students will have a better learning experience if they are prepared for the Library workshop. To help you and your students get the most out of Library workshops:

  • Make sure your students have a purpose for attending a Library workshop and make sure that your students know what that purpose is.
  • Workshops are more meaningful if there is an assignment tied to the workshop. Please send the Library a copy of the assignment.
  • Ensure that the students know what the assignment is and what is expected of them.
  • If students have to choose their own topic make sure that this has been chosen and has been approved.
  • Be clear about the Library resources that you want your students to learn about.
  • Indicate to the Library the research level of your students.
  • Time the workshops so that the students have had time to think about the assignment.
  • Attend the workshop with your students. This makes it clear to students that you value the Library input. By being present you can become familiar with the ever-changing information environment and also be able to request the inclusion of other specific resources that relate directly to your subject area. Often it is only the lecturer who can confirm assignment details.
  • Include details of the Library workshop in course books.

To book a library workshop please contact Joanne Scott x 8285 or use the online booking form
