Professor Philip Sallis - Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Philip Sallis joined AUT in 1999 as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, with a personal professorship in Computer Science. Philip currently works with the Vice-Chancellor and other senior staff to manage the range of academic activities of the University in accordance with its strategic plan.
From 1987 to 1999 he was Foundation Professor of Information Science and departmental head at the University of Otago. Before that he held full-time and visiting academic positions in Australia, the UK, Hong Kong and the USA. He currently holds a visiting research professorship at the University of California Santa Barbara. He maintains an active international collaborative research programme based in New Zealand and the United States. His research interests are in computational linguistics and software metrics.
In addition to his academic career, Professor Sallis has worked in the ICT industry as an analyst/programmer, database designer and facilities planning consultant. He has also been a consultant for local and central government bodies, held working party memberships and has chaired several reviews and commissions.
Between 1989 and 1993 he was President of the New Zealand Computer Society, is a Fellow of the NZCS and is currently New Zealand Chapter Chair of the Association for Computing Machinery. Philip is an Anglican Priest and chairs the Inter-Anglican Telecommunications Commission for the Communion, under appointment from the Archbishop of Canterbury.
