Professor Ian Shirley - Pro Vice-Chancellor Research
Professor Ian Shirley is one of New Zealand’s most experienced social scientists with a national and international profile in Public Policy and in Economic and Social Development. He has been a project leader for major research and development programmes both in New Zealand and overseas including a comparative study of 20 countries coordinated by the Mannheim Centre for Social Research in Germany. Within New Zealand, he was the director of a five year interdisciplinary study of Labour Market dynamics and economic participation funded by the New Zealand Foundation for Research Science and Technology.
Professor Shirley has led ministerial councils for both Labour and National Administrations - acted as a consultant to the Minister of Finance and a budget task force on income tax and social security - and participated as a member of research advisory boards and panels for the National Research Advisory Council, the Royal Society and the Government’s Bioethics Council. He has held Foundation and personal chairs in public and social policy since the mid -1980s and is currently Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) as well as Director of the Institute of Public Policy.
